For sample preparation in the laboratory, one of the more commonly used devices is the magnetic stirrer. The magnetic stirrer is used for non-contact mixing of the medium in vessels such as round-bottomed flasks or beakers. The operation of a magnetic stirrer is based on the use of a rotating magnetic field, which is induced by an alternating magnetic field generator. The magnetic dipole, which is a stirring element placed in the vessel under the influence of changes in the orientation of the magnetic field, rotates in the vessel, thus causing a stirring effect. The generator of the alternating magnetic field in heated stirrers are magnets permanently placed on a flat disc, rotated together with the disc by an independent electric motor. This type of mixer generates a relatively strong electric field, and the rotation control can be carried out over the full operating range without interference. A heating plate (even similar to the plate of an ordinary electric stove) can be placed above the rotating disc with electromagnets, making the device very versatile and able to perform many functions in the laboratory. Very often stirrers based on the design of permanent magnets, are additionally equipped with an integrated thermostat, which provides precise control of the temperature of the medium in the heating baths placed directly on the magnetic stirrer plate.

Magnetic stirrers, known as Dipoles, come in various shapes-sticks, triangles, eggs and others, and their selection should not be dictated only by the volume of the medium, but also by the shape of the vessel used or the viscosity of the liquid. Using a stirrer that is too large can result in a very violent and noisy mixing process. A dipole that is too small will cause mixing only in the center of the vessel, leaving the edges of the vessel static. For very viscous, dense liquids, creep mixers can be used, whose design - shifting the center of gravity - forces a creeping motion that effectively mixes viscous liquids.
