BiOptima Telstar laminar flow chambers are safety class II chambers designed in accordance with the highest standards of safety, ergonomics, energy efficiency, reliability and ease of use. They guarantee protection for the product, the operator and the environment when working with biological agents such as allergens, bacteria and viruses (including SARS-CoV). The line includes four models differing only in width: BiOptima 3 (1033 mm), BiOptima 4 (1338 mm), BiOptima 5 (1643 mm) and BiOptima 6 (1948 mm). All models have the same depth (797 mm externally, 548 mm internally) and height (1450 mm externally, 666 mm internally).

Technical parameters per model

All models provide the same laminar flow rate of 0.35 m/s and operate on a 230 V (50/60 Hz) power supply with H14 HEPA filters and G3 pre-filter. The differences concern the intake air velocity (and the associated efficiency in m³/h), power consumption, illuminance and operating noise.

Design and ergonomics

The chamber and work surface are made of 304L stainless steel with rounded corners, the sides are tempered glass, and the housing is made of powder-coated steel. The 304L steel split table top is autoclavable in parts, making it easy to maintain sterility. A drip tray has been installed under the countertop to collect spilled liquids up to 4 liters (in accordance with EN 12469).

The anti-reflective safety glass windshield is tilted at an angle of 7° and automatically slides, with UV protection and silicone seal all around. It opens to a height of 200 mm, which definitely increases ergonomics and comfort of work. In front of the work surface is a patented, removable V-shaped armrest integrated into the air intake grilles to prevent blocking of the inlet openings. The manual opening mechanism of the front panel allows full access to the work area for inserting a larger object or for a thorough cleaning of the chamber. There are 6 holes in the side walls for wires and accessories.

Control and automation

The operation of the chamber is controlled by a microprocessor controller, and all parameters are displayed on a color, touch LCD screen installed at an angle. The display shows the current laminar, exhaust and inlet flow rates, alarm states, UV lamp status, filter wear rate in percentage and graph, filter leak test information, UV lamp and filter life, total hours of operation of the chamber, fans, UV lamp and filters, as well as the date of the last service inspection. Alarm states are signaled audibly and visually.

The chamber offers three modes of operation: stand-by, 30/70 and decontamination. The UV lamp starts automatically and switches off when the front window is opened. It is possible to disinfect with formaldehyde, and from the controller you can control LED lighting, electrical sockets and a solenoid valve. Access to the control panel is password-protected, and the software is available in four languages: English, Spanish, French and German. The airflow is monitored by two sensors and a built-in anemometric probe.

Filtration and air quality

The chamber is equipped as standard with two HEPA H14 filters (main and outlet) compliant with EN 1822, with an efficiency of 99.995% MPPS and 99.999% DOP, ensuring ISO 4 air purity according to ISO 14644-1 (353 particles ≥0.5 μm/m³, 10000 particles ≥0.1 μm/m³). The EN 779-compliant G3 pre-filter, installed under the work surface, prevents dust, dirt and particles from entering the HEPA filter, so that its lifespan reaches 7 years, and the fans are protected from accidental damage (e.g. by pipette tips or aluminum foil). Recirculation follows a 30/70 pattern: 30% of the air is blown out, 70% is recirculated in the chamber. Changing the filters takes about 5 minutes.

Standard equipment

In addition to the filtration system, the innovative 4F (fast, friendly & efficient) system, automatic windscreen opening, LED lighting installed outside the work chamber for uniform illumination and protection against eye fatigue, two 230V 50Hz electrical outlets, fans with EC motors, a UV lamp with runtime programming and a replaceable CG screen for the best air laminarity are also standard.

IT Configuration for Hospital Pharmacies

IT Configuration is a Telstar solution developed specifically for hospital pharmacies in applications that require the use of pharmaceutical blending programs. Most hospital pharmacies rely on software solutions to help prepare doses and improve medication safety and workflow. The configuration includes on-line gravimetric (weighting) verification, barcode reading, and automatic and electronic documentation of specimens. Designed and manufactured in accordance with EN 12469 and DIN 12980 standards, it is available for sizes 4, 5 and 6 of all BiOptima models: One, Cyto, Exa and BiOptima.

As standard, the IT configuration includes a 21.5" LCD monitor built into the rear wall of the compartment (with HDMI connectivity on the outside) and 2 USB adapters. Optionally, printer and PC support and a swivel keyboard arm can be added. Available accessories include hose components, valves, drip stand, and weighing stone (low vibration for balance measurements).

Application

BiOptima II safety laminar flow chambers are used to work with biological agents: allergens, bacteria and viruses (including SARS-CoV), while ensuring protection of the product, the operator and the environment. The IT configuration expands the application to hospital pharmacies preparing pharmaceutical mixtures. The choice of model depends on the required chamber width: BiOptima 3 (1033 mm) is the smallest model, BiOptima 6 (1948 mm) is the largest.
