Turbidity meters or nephelometers are devices that use one of the most effective spectrophotometric methods available in analytical chemistry. Turbidity meters are used to measure the turbidity of a suspension. The essence of this method of measurement is analogous to that of other spectrophotometric methods, and is based on a reference measurement between the amount of light emitted by the source and the amount of light reaching the detector of the spectrophotometer, after passing through the cuvette with the test sample. This relationship depends on the size of the suspended particles on which the light scattering process occurs.
