A microscope slide is one of the basic accessories when working with a microscope in the laboratory. We distinguish between basic slides, on which a specific slide is placed, and cover slides. Cover slides differ from basic slides in that they are thinner and smaller. Due to the fact of the variety of prepared preparations, slides are available in many sizes. Basic slides (also called subject slides) are rectangular glass plates, which are adapted to the place of the microscope table. Generally speaking, it can be an ordinary piece of glass or a specially prepared piece for specific purposes, for example, in our offer there are special slides for hemocytometer, which is designed for counting cells, the construction of such slides, their size are just adapted to work with this device. In addition, the surface of the basic slides can be smooth or porous. The dimensions of standard slides of this type are usually fixed at 76 x 26 x 1 mm, but it so happens that they can have other dimensions of 76.2 x 25.4 x 1.2 mm. Cover slides are square, thin plates of glass or plastic, they are used to cover the prepared slide, which on the basic slide. This type of slide has certain dimensions, which cannot be larger in any plane than the dimensions of the basic slide - they do not go beyond its outline. Thanks to its sufficiently thin structure, it guarantees the possibility of sufficiently close microscope objective to the examined specimen. If the thickness of the coverslip is too high, it would not allow to set the proper focus, so it is important that such slides are extremely thin, which also makes them very fragile, and working with them requires special care. Also, an additional role of cover slips is to protect the slide from damage. This is relatively important when you have a collection of slides as well as in maintaining the longer survival of survival material by protecting it from rapid drying. There are times when the coverslip is designed for direct placement of material on it, at these moments the base slide is the stand. Such a situation is encountered, for example, in the case of observing a preparation in a hanging drop, this is a method in which a drop of suspension containing the material under examination is placed on the cover slip, then it is turned over and placed on the basic slide, in which there is a special recess. Using the hanging drop method, it is possible to view actinomycetes, some species of fungi cultured on a solid medium that is covered with a coverslip. Once the fungus grows, the slide with the fungus can be observed under the microscope. Slides also have protection against sticking and scratching, in addition, it is possible to sign them, because they contain a special field for this purpose showing resistance to solvents.
